Beeswax...

Beeswax - in general -

Beeswax is a true wax, as opposed to Paraffin, which is a petroleum by product. Beeswax is secreted from four glands on the underside of young bees' abdomens, and is synthesized by reducing sugars in honey that they have eaten. Studies indicate the amount of honey used to produce 1 pound of beeswax, varies from 6.6 to 8.8 pounds, with average being established at 8.4 pounds of honey per pound of wax.

Pure beeswax, as found in the scales bees secret is white, irrespective of food source. The yellow hue typically associated with beeswax is derived from fat soluble pigments in pollens. Beeswax has an agreeable honey-like odor, and faint distinctive taste. It has a melting point of 148o Fahrenheit and begins to solidify at 146o Fahrenheit.

Beeswax - Uses -

Beeswax has numerous uses in today's society, foremost amongst those being the manufacture of cosmetics. Beeswax is used in numerous formulas for cold creams, ointments, lotions, rouges, lipsticks, and lip-balms. The second largest user of beeswax is the candle industry. Pure beeswax candles burn virtually smoke free. Beeswax candles are therefore highly regarded in religious ceremony, especially by the Roman Catholic Church. Third in line of high-end users of beeswax, is the beekeeping industry itself.

Beeswax is also used in explosives, some gun powders, pharmaceuticals (salves, ointments, pill coatings, etc.), dentistry (Impression Wax, Base Plate Wax), and foundries use beeswax in the manufacturing processes. Beeswax is also used in waterproofing materials and polishes (for furniture, floors, leather goods, and telescopic lenses). Minor uses include the use of beeswax in adhesives, crayons, chewing gum, inks, basketball molding, grafting wax, ski wax, ironing wax, wax for thread and archers' bow strings. Demand for Beeswax in the US exceeds production significantly, and the nation imports most of it's beeswax from various overseas markets.
